Urban ports are an integral part of city activities and play an important role in social activities such as maritime trade, tourism, fishing and recreation. Water quality in ports and harbours has a significant impact on human health and environmental conditions and is therefore a crucial social issue. With a smart breakwater design in conjunction with the use of modern management technologies, it is possible to achieve a satisfactory water quality inside city ports.
The research group is involved in the exploration of beneficial breakwater segments in order to achieve the highest possible water exchange, while maintaining adequately low sea surface disturbance due to wave energy penetration inside the enclosed basin. Currently, design measures that are being explored are flushing culverts embedded into breakwaters, permeable sections in rouble breakwaters, floating pontoon breakwaters, new types of permeable breakwater, water aeration and forced seawater circulation inside the basin. The research group's work is being carried out with the intent of defining technical, legal and management procedures for the control of sea conditions in enclosed city basins (ports, marinas and small craft harbours) with the ultimate goal of creating a healthy environment.
The purpose of flushing culverts embedded in breakwaters is to improve seawater exchange inside ports, marinas or harbours. The aim of the project is to develop guidelines in order to provide the necessary seawater exchange inside ports and harbours utilizing flushing culverts. The flushing culvert installment inside breakwaters are the most cost-effective method of seawater exchange improvement.
Environmentally friendly breakwater design encompasses the application of permeable and impermeable breakwater sections. Permeable sections are specifically design to enable seawater exchange forced by various natural generators and simultaneously minimize wave energy penetration into the protected basin.
